MIYA FOLICK STOCK IMAGE

Miya Folick has always presented herself as a diverse artist, whether through the angsty grunge-rock of ‘Trouble Adjusting’ or the ‘70s-style magnetism of ‘Dead Body’, and now the Californian musician turns to the realm of synth-pop for newest single ‘Stock Image’. Throughout the track, we follow the alternating tempo of electronic rhythms and Folick’s straight-talking lyrics. In the opening verse, Folick’s voice lifts from a indignant drawl to take on a more positive attitude: “don’t you get too far from yourself, / you’re so hard on yourself.” It’s surely a feeling experienced by many creatives who strive to better themselves and improve their art, but perfectionism stifles creativity and through this cold bath of reality, Miya Folick learns to accept herself. The chorus is a bright, dance-along moment with phantasmal vocals and punching synth rhythms in the foreground, with alternative guitars and energetic feel-good piano arrangements in the background. ‘Stock Image’ is the kind of punch-your-fists-in-the-air song as you gear up to take on the day. - Hannah Thacker
